Disasters are one of the most important global issues. Disasters have significant impacts on vulnerable risk groups. Children, especially children with special needs, are one of these risk groups. This process can be much more challenging, complex and chaotic for the child with special needs and his/her family. Most children with special needs and their families experience difficulties and challenges all the time, such as inability to participate in social activities, stigmatisation, present and future anxiety of the child, mental and emotional problems. This necessitates a multidisciplinary approach (health, law, psychological counsellor, special education specialist, social service specialist, etc.) to the child with special needs and his/her family. In a sense, it may be possible for the child and his/her family experiencing psychosocial crisis to re-establish a connection with life through psychological support and assistance. One of the interventions offered for the child and his/her family to receive care, ensure their safety and meet their basic needs during the disaster is Psychological First Aid (PFA). In this vital period of time, healthcare professionals are the first to reach the disaster area and it is of critical importance that they have the knowledge and skills to support the individuals exposed to the disaster to cope with the situation they are in, in other words, to know psychological first aid practices. For this purpose, a psychological first aid book was prepared for children with special needs and their families in disasters with experts from different professional groups. This book will be a guide for undergraduate health students and academicians. The book chapters cover eight stages of psychological first aid intervention steps (1-Establishing relationship and bonding, 2-Ensuring safety and comfort, 3-Stabilisation, 4-Obtaining information, 5-Helping with basic needs, 6-Social support, 7-Informing, 8-Associating with other services that can be cooperated with) and the book consist of 13 chapters in line with the authors’ areas of expertise. This book is dedicated to children with special needs and their families who have experienced the disaster. Kind regards,
