Özet
Changes in stand structure result in varying ecological conditions in a forest. The strong relationships between canopy structure and the environmental factors, which affect seedling growth, influence forest establishment as well as the competition among species. Whether it is natural or artificial regeneration, determination of these relationships among canopy structure, environmental factors, growth and mortality are especially vital to establish and maintain continues forest covers. Horizontal and vertical structure of canopy have influences on the growth and mortality of seedlings that are present in understory and midstory. The microclimate conditions created by canopy structure not only affect the seedlings of target species, but also the existence of unwanted understory vegetation. Black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) one of the most economically important tree species in Turkish Forestry. Successful regeneration of this economically and ecologically important tree species is vital for the future of nation’s forests. Juniper (Juniperus L.) species grows understory in the form of bush or small trees. Thus, it can be found in understory of black pine forests, and they can negatively influence the growth and survival of black pine seedlings by competing with them. Studies regarding the seedling growth and mortality have usually focused on the impacts of basal area (m 2 ha-1) and canopy closure (%) on the growth and survival of target species such as black pine.
