Özet |
The aim of the current study was to investigate how environmental literacy (and its sub-categories) was treated in the Turkish science textbooks. Being descriptive in nature, this study employed content analysis method. This study included Turkish science textbook series from the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels. In particular, this study examined all written textbook contents (sentences) except for the examples and exercises. A coding scheme including environmental literacy strands of knowledge, skills affect, and behavior was constructed. Data collected by the experts was presented by means of the descriptive statistics (percentage and frequency tables). The results of the study indicated that the environmental literacy strands were distributed unevenly in the textbooks. Moreover, the knowledge strand (with a coverage range from 88% to 95 for each textbook) was the most represented strand by the elementary science textbooks in Turkey. On the other hand, the affect strand was the least covered (with an average of 0.9%) environmental literacy strand within the textbooks. Moreover, except for knowledge, the other strands were also deemphasized in the science textbooks. |
