Özet |
Breast milk is the most suitable nourishment for infants, providing nutrients, bioactive molecules, and antibodies that contribute to the maturation of the baby's immune system, organ development, and healthy microbial colonization. While supporting the growth and development of the infant, breast milk is rich in nutrients that reduce the frequency of diseases and deaths, effectively inhibit pathogens, and protect against infections. It provides active and passive immunity, crucial in developing a strong response to infectious diseases. This unique combination turns breast milk into a comprehensive protective shield supporting the overall health of infants. There are very few contraindications to breastfeeding. The global COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light numerous health issues, including the safety of breastfeeding for infants born to affected mothers. Despite international and national health organizations recommending breastfeeding for mothers infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) during the COVID-19 pandemic, uncertainties persist in practical application regarding the safety of infants and the perceived advantages and disadvantages of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding can reduce the risk of intestinal and respiratory infections in newborns and increase their survival rate. The risk of vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through breast milk is low. Additionally, beyond the broad scientific consensus on the advantages of breastfeeding, research suggests an additional benefit of transferring protective antibodies and other elements with antiviral properties to the baby through breast milk.
