Özet
The scope of this study is the long journey of an icon. Our Lady of Vladimir has a long history throughout the ages. The icon was sent by the Patriarch of Constantinople in 1131 as a gift to the Duke of Kiev, Yuri Dolgorikiy, in order to spread the Orthodox faith among the Slavic people. The icon, preserved in Moscow Tretyakov Gallery, has a symbolic significance for the Russian people. It has also a feature of being a national palladium for Russian society. Virgin Mary was accepted as the protector/patron of some cities. In this context Constantinople, the capital city of Byzantium and later Venice, Moscow, Vladimir are the cities which were believed to be protected by Virgin Mary. In post Byzantine era, the icon of Vladimir Theotokos sustained its patronage over Russian people. This patronage tradition is also observed in the recent history of Russia. For example, in the 1993 Russian Constitution Crisis, by the request of the Patriarch Alexi II, the icon was brought to the Epiphany Cathedral in order to bring peace to Russian people. It is observed that the patronage tradition of Vladimir Theotokos icon continues in Mel Gibson’s preference both for choosing the name as “icon” for his production company and the eye of Vladimir Theotokos in its logo.
