Özet |
Gerontocracy refers to systems in which government/leadership is concentrated in the hands of the oldest individuals in a society. Their common characteristics are being conformist and conservative, reluctant to change and they are even active resistance to change. Generation Z on the other hand refers to the demographic group which was born after 1996 in which the largest members are 23 years old now. The main characteristics of generation Z can be listed as willing to move independently and freely, open and willing to change, being entrepreneurial and competitive, preferring online environments for communication and interaction since they have never seen a world without digital technologies and low trust in their parents and in the elderly compared to previous generations. Generation Z constitutes 24% of the population in Turkey and ranks first among European Union countries (generation Y (1980-2000) 25%, generation X (1965-1980) 21%, baby boom generation (1945-1965) 18%). On the other hand, according to 27th General Election, 86.6% of the assembly consists of individuals aged 40 and over. Therefore, it would not be wrong to characterize the current political system as a gerontocracy in Turkey (a similar situation exists in most political institutions in Turkey).The fact that the characteristic features of the gerontocracy and the generation Z are diametrically opposite each other creates many problems and contradictions in political communication.
