Özet |
Increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration which could be responsible for global climatic warming considered by the Rio summit in 1992 are now in dangerous level. Therefore, the need for an accurate inventory of carbon stocks and the capacity of forest to accumulate carbon has been strongly emphasized at in many conferences. The sampling effort required to assess soil carbon stocks is large, resulting in limited sampling and poor estimates of the size, spatial distribution, and changes in soil carbon stocks in many countries. We therefore aimed at investigating the effects of tree species on soil carbon pools in the northwest of Turkey. We studied mineral soil carbon stock rates at two soil depths (0-10 cm and 10-20 cm) under four tree species; black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold.), beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Uludağ fir (Abies nordmanniana Spach.) and also under adjacent grassland. The results showed that there were significant differences in soil C content between four three tree species and grassland. Mean soil carbon stock rates (0-20 cm depth) was the highest under black pine (79 Mg C ha-1) followed by Scots pine (73 Mg C ha-1), fir (71 Mg C ha-1), beech (67 Mg C ha-1) and grassland (65 Mg C ha-1). In general, the results have shown that tree species can influence forest soil stocks, so, quantification of the effect of tree species on carbon stocks combined with spatial information on tree species distribution could improve insight into the spatial distribution of forest carbon stocks of the northwest of Turkey. |
