Özet
In recent years, desertification has been considered as a key issue in environmental conservation. One of the clearest indicators of its advance is the degradation or disappearance of vegetation cover. Reduced vegetation cover leaves the soil progressively unprotected against the action of wind or raindrop impact. It favours intensification of the erosive processes and severe soil structural breakdown. Several strategies and techniques have been developed to control the impact of water erosion and to protect soils. Several shrub species have been tested and used to prevent water erosion or for soil retention depending on their availability and cost. However, in some countries, the uses of grasses on the eroded sites have revealed better results to prevent soil losses and runoff compared to the use of only young tree plantation technique. In this study, we therefore aim at determining soil loss and runoff from the terraces planted by dog rose (Rose canina), Black pine (Pinus nigra) with and without using covers of Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop). The rate of plant growth and its influence on some physical and morphological properties of soil were also determined and compared to the unplanted sites and mature Black pine stands. The results have shown the effectiveness of shrub and grass cover in controlling soil erosion and runoff on sloping tree plantation sites. An understanding of the effectiveness of vegetation in protecting the soil surface against erosion can be a great practical value in land management and tree plantation technique in semi-arid environments in Turkey.
