Özet |
Forests in Turkey provide a range of goods and services such as wood for heating, construction, production, home for wildlife and job for forest related community. As a result of numerous problems such as increasing populations, environmental pollutions, shortage in raw materials, soil erosion, global warming, utilization of forests and the expectation of people from forests inevitably changed and more attention has to be given to modern forest management. One has to understand that forests are not only timber resource but also offer many other values like recreation, aesthetic and social health. In Turkey, forest management planning studies was launched in 1917. Yet, first forest management plan prepared in 1963 within context of modern forest management. Main management objective has been maximum timber production till 1990’s. Forest values were not taken into consideration in preparing forest management plan process. Turkey has started somehow sustainable forestry activities and carried out projects including different planning approaches focusing on multiple use values of forests after the signing biodiversity agreement in 1992. These projects are Mediterranean Forest Use Project, Forest Resource Information System (FRIS) and Global Environment Facility (GEF II). |
