Özet
This paper presents and discusses the results of a fire behavior study in a young calabrian pine plantation. As part of a larger study dealing with the prediction of fire behavior in several fuel types in Turkey for the establishment of a national fire danger rating system, an experimental burning exercise, each 0.4 ha in size, was carried out in the summer of 2004 and 2005 in an 18-year-old calabrian pine (Pinus brutia) plantation in Kesan, northwestern Turkey. Topography was level to undulating with a slight north facing aspect. Fuel conditions within the stands were homogeneous and mostly undisturbed. Experimental burns were carried out under varying weather conditions. Fire behavior and impact characteristics (ie, fuel consumption, rate of spread and frontal fire intensity) were strongly correlated with fire weather and fuel conditions. Based on the data gathered, regression equations were generated to predict fire behavior. The results of this study will be invaluable in the development of Turkey’s national forest fire danger rating system.
