| The post-anesthesia recovery area was defined in 1873. In 2013, the term PACU was officially adopted to refer to all areas, previously called “recovery rooms”. PACUs have turned into specialized intensive care units that cover all age groups from neonates to the geriatric population and can provide care for many developing surgical procedures. The PACU provides general medical supervision and care to patients who have undergone a recent surgical operation, regardless of the type of anesthesia. Postoperative care can be divided into subsections, such as the PACU, fluid management, bleeding monitoring, analgesia, and requirements for specific urological conditions. Fluid management is important in urological surgeries during the perioperative period. Dynamic assessment and treatment of rapid changes in fluid balance are required. Intraoperative and postoperative bleeding should be carefully monitored and managed by appropriate blood products. Intraoperative hypothermia increases blood loss and transfusion risks and prolongs the elimination times of drugs, thus delaying recovery and prolonging the hospital stay. Inadequate postoperative pain control may delay recovery, prolong hospital stay, increase costs and possibly lead to the development of chronic pain, which is a major concern in surgical patients. Malnutrition increases postoperative complications and mortality. Urological surgeries have a wide range of surgical procedures and also, patients of a wide range of ages and physical conditions. Every patient and surgical procedure should be considered individually. |
