In Turkish Educational System, life studies is taught in the 1st, 2ndand 3rdgrades of elementary schools. Out-of-school learning environments play an important role in the teaching of this course, organized on the basis of individual, society and nature. The aim of this study is to elicit elementary school teachers’ perceptions about the out-of-school learning environments and their applications used in the life studies course. This study used descriptive research in the context of quantitative methodology. In the spring semester of 2017-2018 academic year, the study was conducted with 312 elementary school teachers from across the country. “Elementary School Teacher Perceptions Questionnaire for Out-of-School Environments” was used as a data collection tool, developed by researchers. About analyzing the data, content analysis was used for open-ended questions while descriptive analysis was used for closed- ended questions. The results showed that the majority of teachers use out-of-school environments in the life studies courses. They stated that out-of-school learning environments have an impact on the knowledge, skills and affective dimensions of educational activities. Also they pointed out that due to the student, management, parent and local oriented causes, they can not use out-of-school environments efficiently in their courses. Besides, the results revealed that majority of teachers mostly use nature education as an out-of-school environment, and they focus on the skill of nature’s protection and the value of environmental awareness. |
