Özet
Colchicums (Crocus spp.) which appear with yellow, red, blue, white and purple colored flowers all over the countrysides in fall and spring season, belong to the Iridaceae family which includes herbaceous plants. In this family, there are 1500 species of 60 genus on the world. The species are generally known as 'Bulbed Plants' in spite of the species may have rhizomes, corms or bulbs. The total of 72 Crocus taxa included in 36 species and 36 sub-species grow naturally in Turkey. Also, 40 of these taxa included in 19 species and 21 sub-species are endemic for Turkey. The colchicums species for exception of Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) have not been commercially cultivated yet. The aim of this paper is emphasizing the importance of colchicum utilization in the landscape architecture and parks as an ornamental plant. Because, the colchicums among the bulbed plants which effects the people positively with their beautiful flowers would be expected to gain an important economic value in the near future. Therefore, mankind should gain one important ornamental plant species and thus, one of the rapidly eroded plant species as seen the other wild species may be protected from its extinction by its widespread propagation as an ornamental plant.
