“I Read a Book Which is not Written by Pen”: “Reading” in Yûnus Emre’s Dîvân in the Context of Oral Culture and Writing

The acquaintance of the Turks with written culture dating back to the 5th century has gradually in-creased in the included cultural circles. In the Middle Age, many Turkish scientists were trained in different branches of science in the circles where Turks were also included, and this knowledge and experience reached Anatolia with the migrations. In the 11th century, madrasas, libraries, mosques and tekkes were built in places where the Seljuks ruled; scientific life was revived. It can be assumed that a certain literacy level was reached in Anatolia during the years that Yunus Emre lived. However, it is not possible to say that the written cultural environment and the works given around the written tradition reached everyone. In this period, when the oral tradition was still alive, audience groups were formed around the manuscripts. It can be said on the basis of the documents of the next centuries that those who know how to write, recorded the texts they heard and listened in various media. In this study, based on the critical text of Yunus Emre's Divan prepared by Mustafa Tatcı, the meanings attributed to the word "reading" and the ways of reading were determined by considering the "reading" in the Dîvân in the context of oral culture and written culture. Based on the poems of Yunus Emre who died in the first half of the 14th century, examining the concept of "reading" from a folkloric per-spective in this period will contribute to understand and make sense of the transition from oral culture to written culture. The article focuses not on Yunus Emre's literacy, but on the concept of "reading" in his po-ems. For this reason, in the period until Yunus Emre, it was tried to draw the framework of the written cultural environment which are created by the Turks and the tekke as a reading environment was emphasized. Yunus Emre hymns gained continuity through oral tradition and written tradition through divans, journals and conks. Therefore, the meaning attributed to the word "reading" in the environments where Yunus Emre hymns are sung/read is important for understanding the process. It has been seen that the word "reading" is given meaning in the context of speech and writing in the Divan of Yunus Emre. “Reading” in written culture environment means getting educated and also deciphering the meaning of a written text from a book and notebook. The educational process and practices in tekkes are expressed by using the "reading" centered concepts of the written culture environment. Reading in the tekke environment, which is mostly shaped around oral culture but also includes writing; means understanding, realizing, knowing oneself and God. In these environments, the forms of reading, silent reading, reading aloud and reciting have been shaped. Reading also means "invita-tion" regardless of the writing. As a result, it seems that the word "reading" has various meanings which are related and differ from each other in the contexts of oral culture, oral-written culture and written culture in Yunus Emre's Dîvân.
