Cultural memory and continuity: From henna nights to graduation hennas

Özet
There are some important transition periods in human life such as birth, marriage and death. There are also some interval times in terms of the current civilization that is belonged to and social acceptance. ‘’The graduation’’ should be added to these transition periods in today’s world. The knowledge and skills of the student are approved by official institutions, societies and individuals in the process of education with graduation. The graduation has some unique ceremonies such as the official graduation ceremonies which are given graduation certificate to students, and graduation proms, graduation dinner, graduation henna ceremony and graduation mawlid which are organized informally by students. In this paper, the college graduation is accepted as a transition period and “graduation henna ceremony” which is one of the ceremonies to be celebrated the graduation by students, has been examined. The aim of the essay is that questioning whether cultural memory sources or not through the new ceremonies by comparing ‘’graduation henna ceremony’’ and henna night. The graduation ceremonies are observed by the way of field study, interviews are conducted with various students who attend the ceremony. One other source of the study is the comments of students in the electronic environment. Firstly, the conceptual framework including cultural memory and ritual has been established in the essay. Then, ‘’the graduation henna ceremonies’’ which have been raised between the students groups was studied by taking into consideration the henna nights that are the rituals of the marriage that is important transition period in human life. Thus, it has been discussed whether “the henna nights” source “the graduation henna ceremonies” or not. In addition to the reason of fun to organize “the graduation henna ceremonies”, they also attribute the reason which the previous students organize the henna organizations. The graduation henna ceremony looks like the traditional henna night according to participants. To sum up, we can say that the structure of the traditional henna ritual looks like the structure of the modern graduation henna ceremonies, there are also some similarities and differences between the meaning and aim, the graduation henna ceremonies shapes by considering the henna night in tradition, cultural memory is affective in shaping the new.
