An Outlook of Refractory Recycling Experiences in Iran

Özet
This paper aims to report the results of investigations carried out in Iranian cement, copper and steel industries by refractory research division of Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST) to reuse the spent magnesia-chromite and magnesia-graphite refractory bricks in last 15 years. Economical aspects of recycling were analyzed on the basis of crushing the spent bricks and development new refractories for local applications. Also environmental effects of spent refractories landfills were studied by chemical analysis. It was clarified that about 70% of refractory wastes could be recycled successfully and the impacts of environmental protection was to be very significant. Also the recycled refractories were installed and tested in industrial furnaces. This paper will also explain the methods of making new refractories and the evaluation of their properties for industrial applications.
