Özet
This chapter explores gendered transnational authoritarianism in the con-text of the global Uyghur emigrant and diaspora communities, focusing on digital information and communication technology (ICT). The chapter does so to highlight what I term" digital transnational authoritarianism," particularly its gendered impacts, which is done by building on the burgeoning area of transnational authoritarianism. By digital transnational authoritarianism, I mean the cyber-based aspects of transnational authoritarianism. Transnational authoritarianism refers to" any effort to prevent acts of political dissent against an authoritarian state by targeting one or more existing or po-tential members of its emigrant or diaspora communities"(Tsourapas 2021, 618). While the term has only recently been coined to describe the oppres-sive reach of the state to its citizens and diaspora communities living beyond its borders, such repressive strategies have a long history. However, given the increased rates of migration in recent decades-linked to the trifecta of globalization, human rights-abusing governments, and climate change, all of which drive emigration abroad-the spread of ICTs, particularly within the cybersphere and increasing autocratization globally, transnational au-thoritarianism is rising in occurrence. This is because it is more efficient for states to engage in transnational authoritarian practices digitally to ensure that emigrant and diaspora communities do not go against the state's wishes.
