| Geographical indications are the industrial property right that define a product from a certain region or are attributed to the geographical source thereof in terms of its quality, fame or other characteristic features, and represents a region. It was first used to differentiate the products that gained importance due to the geographical origin thereof and showed the first example of branding generally by being formed of the name of the geographical area where the products were grown and/or produced. The biggest feature that makes the geographical indications important is to protect the local product and tastes and to use this as a development instrument in local economic development. Constituting an important potential in reviving local economies, the geographical indications reveal some new opportunities especially for rural areas. They evoke a sense of wonder with respect to the culture in which the product is manufactured, the local people, their lifestyle and history and attract the tourists to the region and provide the rural tourism to be revived. In addition to the contribution made by the product having geographical indication to the industry thereof, it also provides the development of many business lines around the product. With the improvements creating or increasing income such as restaurants, souvenir shops, and activities for tourists, it helps for the development of the local people.In direct proportion with the increasing job opportunities, geographical indications also prevent rural-to-urban migration.
