Özet |
Petroleum-based plastic has grown at an average annual rate of 8.5% since 1950 when petroleum-based plastic was 1.5 million metric tons. 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic has been produced since 1950. It was estimated that plastic production will be around 600 million metric tons annually by the mid-21st century. By 2050, the estimated cumulative growth of plastic waste created may approach 25 billion metric tons based on the high demand for using plastic. Biopolymers have been proposed as a potential solution to this problem; however, they should fulfill the basic criteria, high quality, and durability while in use, but have high degradability at the end of their lifetime. Replacing petroleumbased plastics with bio-based alternatives provides a more sustainable approach to plastic production because of the reduced associated carbon emissions from petroleum extraction and processing. Poly (hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAs) are entirely biodegradable and biocompatible polyesters in comparison to other biopolymers. Moreover, high-cost carbon sources are one of the main challenges in the aspect of production costs and scaling-up production. The cost of carbon resources is responsible for ~40% of the total production cost of PHAs due to artificial sources. The residual as liquid and solid parts of digestate from the AD process can be used for feedstock to produce PHAs due to abundance and low cost. The digestate is both cost-effective and a good source of carbon, both of which are necessary for the synthesis of PHAs. This chapter focuses on the production of PHAs from liquid and solid parts of the digestate, its recovery, purification, characterization, and applications. |
