| Aim: Premature termination of ongoing treatmentmay lead to insufficient or ineffective treatment andenduring symptoms of the disorder. The aim of the studyis to examine the relationship between dropout anddiagnosis, treatment modality, and socio-demographiccharacteristics of children.Material and Method: The sample consisted of 104patients (aged 10.7±4.4 years), attended to a universityhospital child and adolescent psychiatry out-patientclinic. The socio-demographic variables and diagnosiswere obtained from the medical files. Analysis wereperformed in children with externalizing (n:42) andinternalizing (n:33) disorders, due to low frequency ofother diagnosis.Results: Vast majority of patients were boys (n=66,63.5%). The engagement into treatment was foundsignificantly related only with patient age, mean age washigher in those who engaged into treatment (11.90±3.85and 9.78±5.12 years respectively, p:0.038). Childrentreated with medication engaged into treatment morethan children treated with therapies (p:0.001). Gender,diagnosis, maternal and paternal education levels werenot correlated with patient engagement.Conclusion: Because treatment engagement is necessaryto use time and effort labor effectively, protective factorsfrom drop-outs, such as dynamic factors and many othercharacteristics of patient, family and mental healthsystem continue to be investigated in order to increasetreatment engagement. |
