| The main purposes of this study were to compare Exponential, Exponential-2p, Johnson SB, Weibull-2p and Weibull-3p probability density functions for describing the diameter distribution of uneven-aged pure stands of Kazdağı fir (Abies nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojani) in Kastamonu region of northern Turkey and to investigate the effects of stand characteristics such as mean diameter, number of trees, basal area, stand density and stand type on determining the most appropriate distribution function. The data obtained from 345 sample plots, which were randomly selected among the sample plots in General Directorate of Forestry archives, were used as the study material. Maximum likelihood method was used to estimate the parameters of probability density functions, and Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) statistic was used to determine the success of functions and to decide the most appropriate one. The effects of stand characteristics on the performance of distribution functions were determined by Analysis of variance and Chisquare tests. Analysis of variance was also used to compare the parameters of the most successful function according to stand types. As a result of comparisons, Johnson SB outperformed the other functions. Besides, Weibull functions also performed better than Exponential functions. There were significant differences in the success of probability density functions in terms of stand type, while the functions did not show any difference according to mean diameter, number of trees, basal area and stand density.
