Özet |
In the first half of the 20th century, theater in Palestine was an important part of the cultural transformations in the region. This period was shaped by the beginning of the British Mandate after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the intense Jewish immigration that began in the late 19th century and continued. During this period, Palestine, with its cultural diversity and religious and political structure, also under the influence of European influence, provided a rich environment for theater. Both the Jewish and Arab communities tried to express their cultural identities through theater. While the British encouraged cultural activities in order to modernize the region, they also censored artistic activities by putting forward protest discourse, security, and moral norms. During this period, Western theater styles and film standards were brought to the region, but this cultural change combined with the traditions of the local people and gave rise to a cultural life that included both local and international elements. During this period, theater became a reflection of social tensions, the development of national identity, and traditional and modern understandings. While the Jewish and Arab communities maintained their own identities, they also interacted with each other. While Arab theater drew on traditional storytelling and shadow plays, Jewish theater was particularly prominent with plays performed in Yiddish and Hebrew. Theatre was used not only as entertainment but also as a medium to reflect social and political issues. |
