Özet
Tour guiding has emerged as a prominent research topic within tourism scholarship, reflecting the growing interest in understanding the role of tourist guides and their influence on visitor experiences. This study presents a critical review of the evolution and current state of tour guide research, using a bibliometric analysis to map key trends and intellectual developments in the field. While early research (1960–1980 s) focused on establishing foundational theories, recent studies have emphasized qualitative aspects such as tourist satisfaction, guide performance, and emotional intelligence. Since 2018, a noticeable shift towards integrating technology in tour guiding has occurred, with topics like mobile guides and augmented reality gaining traction. Despite the increasing volume of research, gaps remain in theoretical development and comparative cross-cultural studies. This paper highlights the dominant themes, including sustainability and ethical tourism, and identifies future research opportunities, particularly in exploring the emotional labour of guides, the integration of technology, and the dynamics of guide-tourist interactions. The review concludes with a research agenda aimed at deepening the understanding of tour guiding practices, offering insights for improving visitor experiences and guiding the future of tour guide scholarship.
