| Özet |
| Abstract Night Eating Syndrome (NES) and Sleep-Related Eating Disorder (SRED) involve eating behaviors that emerge during similar time periods; however, they are classified as two distinct clinical entities in different diagnostic systems. While NES is categorized as an eating disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), SRED is considered a sleep disorder in the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, Third Edition (ICSD-3). This review provides a comparative analysis of the diagnostic criteria, epidemiological features, pathophysiology, and treatment approaches of both conditions. Despite their classification differences, both disorders exhibit overlapping clinical characteristics, such as reduced sleep duration, poor sleep quality, obesity, and psychiatric comorbidities associated with nighttime eating behaviors. However, the two conditions diverge in terms of diagnostic systems, level of consciousness during episodes, memory recall, type of food consumed, and motivational factors underlying the eating behavior. These symptomatic similarities may lead to diagnostic challenges in clinical practice. Addressing this complexity requires careful consideration of differential diagnostic criteria. Adopting a multidisciplinary assessment approach is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning |
