BackgroundAssessing science process skills and 21st-century competencies has become a key priority in STEM-based science education. However, current assessment practices mostly emphasize cognitive outcomes and traditional item formats, which limits the measurement of higher-order and performance-based skills. Teachers’ perspectives point to a need for curriculum-aligned, valid, and reliable assessment tools for lower secondary science.PurposeThis study aimed to develop, validate, and implement a STEM-based Science Skills Test to assess Grade 6 students’ science process skills and 21st-century competencies through open-ended, performance-oriented items.MethodsA mixed-method, multi-stage design was used.
