The historical development of Turkish airlines operating in civil aviation industry (1933-1960)

| This study deals with the practices in the field of aviation in Turkey from the 20th of May 1933, when the State Airlines Authority (one of the important enterprises in the field of civil aviation) was founded, to the 27th of May 1960 and the reflections of these practices on economy. The activities and works performed in all aspects of aviation field from the first years of the Republic to 1960 were examined in two periods: the period between 1933 and 1950 when the Republican People’s Party (CHP) was in power and the period between 1950 and 1960 when the Democrat Party (DP) was in power. The contributions of the developments occurring in Turkish Airlines to national economy were examined through a comparison of the periods of CHP and DP governments based on numeric data. The gap in the literature about the subject focused on in this study was filled by use of primary sources. Necessary evaluations were made by considering the developments in aviation field both in Turkey and in the world in that period. In the period of CHP government, a considerable growth/increase took place in the fleet of the airline, the number of the passengers carried by it, the amount of cargo transportation by it, the number of the airports allocated for it, and its revenue. However, such growth/increase was bigger in the period of DP government. However, in both periods, the airline made loss as its income was lower than its expense. Its budget deficit was closed by the assistance provided by the state treasury. In addition, the incapability of Turkish Airlines to put new international flight destinations into operation except for those in a couple of countries caused it to fall behind in that period. |
