| At the beginning of the history of astronomy, scientific theories to describe and construct the motions of planets and stars have gone through three stages: mathematical, physical, and a combination of mathematical and physical. Classical Islamic astronomy scholars generally adopted the theory of celestial mechanics, the third stage in which they wanted to combine Ptolemy’s kinematic approach with Aristotle’s dynamic approach. The developments in the science of astronomy after the 13th century, which is called the “renewal period” of Islamic thought, continued in the Ottoman Empire. The theory of the universe exhibited by ʿAlī Qūshjī (d. 1474) in his worksshould be included in thisthird group. The first Ottoman Turkish translation of Fathiyya (which is Khulāsat al-Hay’a) was made by Saydī ʿAlī Ra’īs (d. 1562) in 1549.
